Florida's afterschool gap: 1.5 million kids want in
Florida ranks third nationally for unmet afterschool demand. According to the Afterschool Alliance's America After 3PM data, 527,771 Florida children (17%) are currently in an afterschool program, while 1,473,184 more would be enrolled if one were available — about 3 in 4 of the families who want it.
What's funding programs today
Florida's 21st Century Community Learning Centers allocation for FY2026 is $68,238,349 across 467 programs, serving 71,539 youth. As in every state, the FY2027 President's proposed budget lists $0 for the program — a cut that would land squarely on a state already short well over a million seats.
