Don't wait for August — line up fall afterschool care in June

2026-06-12 ParentsBack to SchoolPlanning

School just let out, so fall care is the last thing most families want to think about. But the quiet truth of afterschool is that the good seats for the 2026–27 school year get claimed over the summer — and in much of the country there are far fewer seats than families who want them. In Texas alone, 2,730,408 children would be enrolled in an afterschool program if one were available — roughly 5 in 6 of the families who want a seat. We've ranked [the states where demand most outpaces supply](/blog/states-biggest-afterschool-demand-gaps/), and the pattern holds almost everywhere.

When demand looks like that, timing is leverage. Here's how to use June well.

Why summer is when seats are won

School-based and federally funded programs typically set rosters before the first day of school. Many 21st CCLC sites — which are free to families — open enrollment in summer and fill on a first-come or priority basis. Private and nonprofit programs (YMCAs, Boys & Girls Clubs, parks and rec) often give returning families first pick, then release remaining spots over the summer. By late August, what's left is often a waitlist.

A June checklist

  • Make your shortlist now. Search your state's directory on [afterschool.network](/) by city, county, or school district, and ask your school's front office which programs operate on campus in the fall.
  • Ask about money up front. Free options exist — start with [how to find a free afterschool program](/guides/free-after-school-programs-how-to-find-one/) and [understanding 21st CCLC funding](/guides/understanding-21st-cclc-funding/). For paid programs, ask about sliding scales and subsidies; our guide to [paying for after-school care](/guides/paying-for-after-school-care/) covers the common ones.
  • Tour while it's quiet. Summer is a low-pressure time to visit. Bring our [questions to ask on a program tour](/guides/questions-to-ask-on-a-program-tour/) and check the [signs of a high-quality program](/guides/signs-of-a-high-quality-program/).
  • Solve transportation early. The best program is the one your child can actually get to — see [transportation to after-school programs](/guides/transportation-to-after-school-programs/).
  • Get on waitlists anyway. Spots open in September as schedules shake out. A waitlist position in June often becomes a seat by October.

If you come up empty

Plenty of families do the work and still find nothing nearby — that's exactly what the demand numbers above describe. You can bridge the gap at home: our [academics hub](/academics/) and [homework help](/homework-help/) resources are free, and Resource Portal AI can generate a free, standards-aligned lesson for your child's grade in minutes — a reliable way to keep the after-3-p.m. hours productive while you wait for a seat to open.

The demand figure above is drawn from the linked public source — we don't estimate.
