New York's afterschool gap: nearly 1.4 million kids want a seat
New York ranks fourth nationally for unmet afterschool demand. According to the Afterschool Alliance's America After 3PM data, 496,792 New York children (19%) are currently in an afterschool program, while 1,374,627 more would be enrolled if one were available — nearly 3 in 4 of the families who want it.
What's funding programs today
New York's 21st Century Community Learning Centers allocation for FY2026 is $104,003,866 across 402 programs, serving 109,034 youth — one of the largest state allocations in the country. Even so, it reaches a fraction of the families on the want-list. And as in every state, the FY2027 President's proposed budget lists $0 for the program.
