10 questions to ask on an after-school program tour

A program can look great on paper and feel completely different in person. A short visit tells you more than any brochure. Bring these questions with you.

Safety and supervision

1. What is your staff-to-child ratio, and does it change during the day?
2. How do you screen and train staff?
3. What are your sign-in and pick-up procedures, and who is authorized to collect my child?
4. How do you handle emergencies, allergies, and medication?

The daily experience

1. Walk me through a typical afternoon from arrival to pick-up.
2. How much time is spent on homework versus active play versus enrichment?
3. How do you handle conflicts between children?

Academics and communication

1. How do you coordinate with my child's teachers or school?
2. How will you keep me informed about how my child is doing?

Fit

1. What do you do for a child who is struggling to settle in?

If a tour is not offered, treat that as information in itself. Strong programs are usually proud to show you around.
