10 questions to ask on an after-school program tour
A program can look great on paper and feel completely different in person. A short visit tells you more than any brochure. Bring these questions with you.
Safety and supervision
- What is your staff-to-child ratio, and does it change during the day?
- How do you screen and train staff?
- What are your sign-in and pick-up procedures, and who is authorized to collect my child?
- How do you handle emergencies, allergies, and medication?
The daily experience
- Walk me through a typical afternoon from arrival to pick-up.
- How much time is spent on homework versus active play versus enrichment?
- How do you handle conflicts between children?
Academics and communication
- How do you coordinate with my child's teachers or school?
- How will you keep me informed about how my child is doing?
Fit
- What do you do for a child who is struggling to settle in?
If a tour is not offered, treat that as information in itself. Strong programs are usually proud to show you around.
