How to tell if a summer or afterschool program is actually good
Finding a program is half the job. Knowing whether it's any good is the other half — and it's the part most parents have to figure out under time pressure, often after a single quick visit. Here's what actually separates a strong program from one that's just open during the right hours.
What a good program gets right
- The adults seem to know the kids. Watch the staff for ten minutes. Do they greet children by name, get down to their level, redirect calmly? Warm, consistent adults are the single biggest thing a program offers — more than the facility or the flyer.
- There's a real rhythm to the day. A good program isn't a free-for-all and isn't a second school day either. Look for a posted schedule that balances active time, quiet time, a snack or meal, and something that stretches the brain — reading, a project, a club.
- Group sizes are sane. Ask how many children each staff member is responsible for. Smaller ratios mean kids get noticed when they're struggling, bored, or left out.
- Kids look engaged, not just contained. The best sign is the children themselves. Are they busy, talking, building, moving with purpose — or parked in front of a screen waiting for pickup?
- They can tell you what your child will actually do. A program with a plan can describe a typical Tuesday. A program that says "oh, it varies" and can't go further usually means it varies because there isn't a plan.
Red flags worth walking away from
- Staff who can't answer basic safety questions — sign-out procedures, allergy handling, what happens in an emergency.
- High staff turnover, or a director who's vague about who's actually with the kids day to day.
- Screens as the default activity rather than an occasional one.
- No clear way to reach someone if your child needs you during the day.

Ask the director: "What do you do when a child is having a hard day?" and "How will I know how my child is doing?" The answers tell you almost everything about whether a place sees your child as an individual or as a head to count.
